Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
